Golf Breaks
Kilkenny, Ireland's medieval capital - characterised by beautifully restored old buildings from the 12th and 13th century like Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice's Cathedral, the Black Abbey and winding slipways - is small and compact enough to explore on foot, yet full of fascinating historical buildings, contemporary shops, design galleries, restaurants, pubs and bars.
But Kilkenny offers more than just 70 pubs and bars, a lot of live music and entertainment - Kilkenny offers some of the best golf courses in South East Ireland:
Gowran Park (16 km from Kilkenny, 20 minutes)
Designed by Jeff Howes Golf Design, the course is a wonderful parkland golf course with tree-lined fairways and superb greens, complemented by various water hazards, lakes and streams. The course provides an excellent test for the low handicap golfer whilst also being very enjoyable for the middle to high handicappers. In fact, this is one of the best golf courses in the South East.
Mount Juliet (16 km from Kilkenny, 25 minutes)
Opened in 1991 and designed by Jack Nicklaus, the beautiful and challenging Mount Juliet course has established itself as a premier golfing venue for Top Professionals and leisure golfers worldwide. Mount Juliet has hosted many major golfing events and welcomed the return of the World's Top 50 golfers to play in the World Golf Championship - American Express Championship in October 2004.
This 18-hole course has already been voted the best inland golf course in Ireland and has earned a reputation as the Augusta of Europe.
Set close to the River Nore, water comes into play on six holes; the beauty of woodlands and trees is ever present, while some eighty ever-vigilant bunkers, strategically placed throughout the course, place a premium on accuracy from tee to green.
Rosslare Golf Club (103 km from Kilkenny, 1 hour 30 minutes)
Rosslare Golf Links is ideally situated in the sunniest part of Ireland. The 18 hole course is laid out by the Irish Sea and is a traditional Championship Links designed by Hawtree and Taylor. The links was first opened for play in 1905. Nine new holes were added in 1992, designed by Christy O'Connor Jnr. The 27 holes provide an excellent test of golf all year round.
Six holes of the old course have been reconstructed in recent years and has led to very favourable comments from members and regular visitors alike. The Rosslare golf links and the resort have a notable tendency to attract golfers who return time and time again. The alchemy of excellent hotels, seaside atmosphere and a superb golf links would seem to be the ingredients of the special magic that is Rosslare.
The European Club (119 km from Kilkenny, 2 hours)
The links of The European Club is located in magnificent sand dunes on the Irish Sea. The European Club is a truly magnificent addition to the world's short supply of approximately 160 true links (51 of these are in Ireland).
The links features 18-holes of exciting links golf through tumbling dunes with dramatic views of the Irish Sea from no fewer than sixteen of the holes! Some of the holes play along the beach!
The European Club links was ranked twenty-fourth amongst the World's Greatest Golf Courses and belongs to the five best Golf Courses in Ireland.
